About

I was born and raised in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia, in a “holler” that has been home to members of my family for hundreds of years. I have a great love and pride for the people, cuisine, and culture of my heritage—and consider myself a southern biscuit connoisseur. I was home schooled until the age of 15, at which point I enrolled at my local community college to finish secondary school and complete an AA degree. I would later attend the University of Virginia, where I studied abroad with Semester at Sea and graduated Phi Beta Kappa and with High Distinction. After spending time working at both the federal and state levels of government, I returned to UVa for my PhD.

My non-work interests include traveling, cycling, tennis, and Taylor Swift’s discography.
